HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PUMP BASKET

The pump basket is located in the pump housing assembly, and its purpose is to collect large debris that the skimmer missed or debris that was sucked through the main drain. This humble basket prevents debris from entering the pump assembly and clogging the impeller. Cleaning and inspecting your pump basket should be on your weekly pool to-do list because your pump has to work harder to cycle the pools water when the basket is clogged with leaves and debris. When this happens, you are not going to get the proper turnover rate, which will result in your water not being filtered as it should be.

Follow these steps to ensure that your pump basket stays consistently free and clear of debris.

  1. TURN OFF POWER TO THE POOL PUMP

Turning off the power will stop the flow of water through the pump. Never, ever, service your pool equipment with the power on.

(For Sand Filters skip to step 3)

  2. RELIEVE BUILT-UP PRESSURE (Cartridge & DE Filters)

Take note of the pressure on the filter pressure gauge, typically it will read between 15-20 psi (pounds per square inch). Relieve the pressure by turning the air relief valve on top of the filter counterclockwise. Water will spray out of the valve while the pressure gauge decreases to 0 psi.

  3. REMOVE THE PUMP LID

  4. REMOVE, CLEAN, AND INSPECT BASKET

Take note on how your basket is positioned within the pump. Use a garden hose to rinse out the debris. Baskets will become brittle and can break easily over time. Inspect the basket for signs of damage. Reinstall.

  5. INSPECT PUMP LID

Since the pump lid is removed, this is the ideal time to check the lids O-ring for stretching, tears, cracks, or any other damage. While you're at it, take the time to apply a thin coat of lubrication on the O-ring; this will help seat the gasket and prolong its life.

  6. REPLACE THE POOL PUMP LID

Hand tightening is sufficient, do not overtighten.

  7. TURN ON POWER TO THE PUMP

When you turn the power back on to the pump, pressure will begin to build back up in the system. You know your pump is working when you see water flow through the pump lid.

  8. CLOSE FILTER AIR RELIEF VALVE (Cartridge & DE Filters)

The filter air relief valve should still be in the open position from step 2. As the pressure builds, air will release from the air relief valve. When all of the air has been released, and water starts to spray out, turn the valve clockwise to close.

Once you get the hang of it, it will take no time at all for you to empty your pump basket. Your pump is critical to your pools circulation system. With regular attention, you will be able to keep your pump operating at its full capacity.
