THE TOP 5 WINTER POOL MAINTENANCE TIPS

Many pool owners may think that once you close your pool for the winter, you're finished taking care of your pool until the following spring. Simply not true, your pool needs year-round attention. Between the winter precipitation coupled with freezing temperatures, real damage can occur to your pool. But no worries! We have some simple tips to follow to make sure that your pool is well taken care of during the winter months.

1 / MAKE SURE YOUR COVER IS SECURE

Heavy rain, snow, and wind can cause damage to your pool cover. Make sure that your winter cover is in place and protecting your swimming pool.

2 / KEEP THE COVER CLEAR OF DEBRIS

Make it a habit to regularly remove leaves and debris from the top of your winter pool cover. Eliminating the accumulation of debris on top of your cover will help prevent your pool cover from being ripped, torn, or otherwise damaged during the winter months. Wet leaves are heavy and weigh your pool cover down. If you have a leaf net, regularly dispose of leaves that have collected on top of the net, otherwise a leaf blower does a great job.

3 / ROUTINELY CHECK YOUR WATER LEVELS

Make sure to keep your water at the correct level. Water levels should be between 4-6 inches below the skimmer inlet in vinyl-lined pools or 4-6 inches below the tile line in concrete and plaster pools.

4 / CHECK FOR ALGAE FORMATION

Check pool water to make sure algae formation has not occurred. Algae typically do not grow in water temperature that is less than 60 degrees; however, it is possible. If you notice algae formation, add winterizing algaecide to your pool water. Preventing extended periods of algae growth will help save your pool's liner, concrete, etc. Plus, managing algae growth in the spring can be a real pain at pool opening.

5 / INSPECT POOL EQUIPMENT

Check your pool and equipment for any signs of damage. Be sure to keep a watchful eye on your pool and its equipment. Pool equipment and pool resurfacing can be costly, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Checking your pool pump, filter, heater, and pool surface periodically can save you tons down the road.

By following these simple tips and keeping a watchful eye on your pool during the winter months, you will save yourself frustration, time, and money as well as increasing the odds of smoothly opening your pool the following spring.
